Hugging Face & Google Partnership, OpenAI Cuts Prices, & Balaji's Case for Prompt Engineering
Hugging Face announced a partnership with Google, OpenAI cut prices while apparently improving laziness in their models, and Balaji believes that prompt engineering is to stay
Hugging Face & Google Announce Partnership for (Mostly) Open AI Collaboration
Hugging Face announced a partnership with Google, which provides developers with affordable access to Google's TPUs and GPUs. This collaboration enables developers to build, train, and deploy AI models through Hugging Face’s platform without needing a Google Cloud subscription.
The partnership will also integrate Hugging Face with Google's AI app-building platform Vertex AI and Kubernetes engine, facilitating model training and fine-tuning, with availability expected in the first half of 2024. Notably, while some of Google's models are available on Hugging Face, their leading large language models such as Gemini and the text-to-image model Imagen remain more closed-source.
OpenAI Enhances Offerings: Drops Prices, Upgrades GPT-4 and Introduces New Models
OpenAI announced price cuts and enhancements to their AI models this week.
API access has been significantly lowered, with a 50% decrease in input prices and a 25% reduction in output costs. An updated GPT-4 Turbo preview model apparently addresses the "laziness" issues many have been concerned about.
Overall, it seems like most of Reddit agrees that this new model improves laziness, as many claim that both the API & ChatGPT have improved.
Balaji Makes His Case for Prompt Engineering
Balaji believes the argument has been settled over "whether prompt engineering would be around to stay, or whether better AI would quickly obviate it."
In short, Balaji believes that prompt engineering is here to stay, at the least as a subset of software engineering.
That is, prompts are tiny programs written in natural language. But the API isn’t specified and varies between models. So guessing the right “function calls” with clever use of vocabulary is a huge part of the game. On the other hand, even if you don’t guess *exactly* the right words to use, the model will often do what you mean.
Could this be another time where "Balaji was right"? Time will tell, in the meantime, his write up is worth a read.
